The Garland of Sleep

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection The Path of SeasonsPeriod 20th century

The garland of sleep,
From night to night suspended,
Over the pale and frail awakening
Of human days is stretched.

It starts from the dark wall
Raised upon our birth,
And fastens to the other wall
Made of night and silence

Which closes off our brief spaces
With its funereal obstacle;
Its regular and heavy arches,
From one darkness to the other,

Seem to set a decor
Upon the ephemeral facade
Of our puny effort;
A black funereal decor.
