The Blackcurrant River

Poem by Arthur Rimbaud Collection Derniers versThemes NaturePeriod 19th century

The Blackcurrant River rolls on, ignored
Through strange valleys:
The voice of a hundred ravens accompanies it, true
And good voice of angels:
With the great movements of the fir groves
When several winds plunge.

Everything rolls on with revolting mysteries
Of campaigns of ancient times;
Of visited dungeons, of important parks:
It is on these banks that one hears
The dead passions of wandering knights:
But how wholesome is the wind!

Let the pedestrian look at these clear ways:
He will go more courageously.
Soldiers of the forests that the Lord sends,
Dear delicious ravens!
Make the crafty peasant flee from here
Who drinks with an old stump.
