The Azures

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendThemes NaturePeriod 19th century

Splendid blue reflections on the walls of glaciers,
That plunge into a shadow as blue and splendid,
Where the pale azures of crystals, of steels,
Refract endlessly in a limpid sapphire,

Where silver, now nacreous, now lucid,
Beside which the moonbeams are coarse,
Unite, in fairy-like and rapid play,
With darken’d blues, sumptuous and princely;

Ideally bluish abyss, strange abyss,
And in which the invisible hand of an angel
Still sows beryls and aquamarines,

I know, O glaciers, a softer abyss,
Richer and shivering with divine clarity,
In the azure of eyes purer and deeper than you.
