Sweet Melancholy Air

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendPeriod 19th century

Sweet melancholy and suave air that passes
In tattered shreds scattered through these great winds,
To their monstrous roars you entwine yourself,
And slip into their voice your deceiving sighs;

For one hardly grasps, in their fury, the traces
Of your frail fragments, weeping or fervent,
And your poor gentleness, mingled with their threats,
Flees, barely heard, in their moving torrents.

And yet it is more than the enormous tempest
That took it on the way, scatters it and bears it off,
For it gives a soul to its formless clamor,

It makes of it the distress where a dream struggles;
And that human accent which it carries transforms
The hurricane howling on the shore into sorrow.
