Summer Dream

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

Let others have blue skies or tormented skies,
The snow of winters, the fragrance of summers,
The mountains you climb, adventurous prides
Of Englishwomen. My eyes prefer the clearings
Where the pork butcher has left his papers,
The paths where one still smells the feet
Of soldiers with their peasant girls, the peninsula
Of Gennevilliers, where the tranquil asparagus grows
Under the stinking irrigation of the sewers…
One does not argue about colors or tastes.
