Scattered Sighs, Sobs Lost in the Air

Poem by Théodore Agrippa D'Aubigné Period 16th century

Scattered sighs, sobs lost in the air,
Piteous witnesses of the sorrows of my distress,
Sharp regrets, aborted by my pain,
And you, my eyes, melted in my tears,

Trembling desires, my frantic thoughts,
Pleasures deceived by a vain hope,
All the starts that to my inhuman death
My weary senses at last have yielded,

Heavens that echo my laments after me,
A thousand languors of a thousand deaths extinguished,
Make Diane feel the wrong

That she holds me, enemy of her own happiness,
When she seeks her life in my ruin
And I find death in her beauty!

Théodore Agrippa d’Aubigné
