Intimate Homeland

Poem by Charles-Nérée Beauchemin Collection Patrie intimePeriod 19th century

I want to live alone with you
The days of life, harsh and sweet,
In the assurance of the Faith,
Until the final shock.

I have made up my mind
To bend to the measure
Of the small circle of horizon
That a corner of native sky makes blue.

My dream has never left
The dark cloister of the dwelling
Where, in duty, I have tasted
All inner peace.

And my most pious love,
And my most flowered celebration,
Is to have always before my eyes
The face of my homeland.

Intimate homeland of my faith,
In an unchanging assurance,
I want to live still with you,
Until the evening of my hope.
