Our Land

Poem by Charles-Nérée Beauchemin Collection Patrie intimePeriod 19th century

Land, whose rugged shores
And giant promontories
Beat back the savage waves
Stirred by two oceans;

Land that, each April, emerges,
All radiant, through
The ashes of your virgin forests
And the snow of your winters;

Land richly varied
With greenery and blossoms,
Which the Lord has wedded
To the Sun of the four seasons;

Queen of the northern lands,
Who, without measure, gives gold,
The gold and silver of the harvests,
Without exhausting its great treasure;

Land that, widowed of a first love,
Has never ceased to give suck
To the people, who from every trial
Always escaped, safe and sound;

Land of perseverance,
Land of faithfulness,
Tenacious as hope,
Serene as a summer sky;

Land whose race evolves
In number, in vigor, in beauty,
Our Land, I salute you,
With love, with pride!
