Let Us Always Love! Let Us Love Again

Poem by Victor Hugo Collection Les contemplationsThemes LovePeriod 19th century

Let us always love! Let us love again!
When love departs, hope flies away.
Love is the cry of the dawn,
Love is the hymn of the night.

What the wave says to the shores,
What the wind says to the old mountains,
What the star says to the clouds,
Is the ineffable word: Let us love!

Love makes us dream, live, and believe.
To warm the heart, it has
One ray more than glory,
And that ray is happiness!

Love! whether they are praised or blamed,
Great hearts will always love:
Join this youth of the soul
To the youth of your brow!

Love, in order to charm your hours!
So that one may see in your beautiful eyes
The mysterious smile
Of inner delights!

Let us love each other more and more!
Let us unite better each day.
Trees grow in foliage;
May our soul grow in love!
Let us be the mirror and the image!
Let us be the flower and the perfume!
Lovers, who, alone under the shade,
Feel themselves two and are but one!

Poets seek the beautiful.
Woman, angel with chaste favors,
Loves to refresh under her wings
These great brows burning and dreamy.

Come to us, touching beauties!
Come to me, you, my good, my law!
Angel! come to me when you sing,
And, when you weep, come to me!

We alone understand your ecstasies.
For our spirit is not mocking;
For poets are the vessels
Where women pour their hearts.

I who seek in this world
Only the sole reality,
I who let flee like the wave
All that is but vanity,

I prefer to the goods with which
the pride of soldier or king is intoxicated,
The shadow that you cast on my book
When your brow leans over me.

Every ambition kindled
In our spirit, subtle brazier,
Falls to ashes or flies away in smoke,
And one says to oneself: “” What remains of it? “”

Every pleasure, a flower barely opened
In our dark and tarnished April,
Sheds its leaves and dies, lily, myrtle, or rose,
And one says to oneself: “” So it is finished! “”

Love alone remains. O noble woman,
If you wish in this vile sojourn,
To keep your faith, keep your soul,
Keep your God, keep love!

Preserve in your heart, without fearing anything,
Even if you must weep and suffer,
The flame that cannot be extinguished
And the flower that cannot die!
