Let Me Think at My Ease

Poem by Charles D'Orléans Collection SongsPeriod 15th century

Let me think at my ease:
Alas! give me the leisure.
I converse (1) with pleasure,
Though my mouth stays silent.

When evil Melancholy,
Comes many times to assault me;
Let me think at my ease,
Alas! give me the leisure.

For so that my heart may be calmed,
I call upon Pleasant memory;
That soon comes to cheer me:
Therefore, for God’s sake! may it not displease you
Let me think at my ease.

1. Deviser: To converse, to discuss.
