The Four Seasons – Spring

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

In spring, it was in the bare woods
That one day we came to know each other.

The buds were pushing up green vapor.
Love was a discovery.

Thanks to the lilacs, thanks to the lilies of the valley,
From dreamers we became merry.

Under the wisteria and the broom,
Both alone, what need is there to say anything?

We would have said nothing, mignonette,
Without your fragrance that helped us.
