I Was Walking Along Treacherous Paths

Poem by Paul Verlaine Collection La Bonne ChansonThemes LovePeriod 19th century

I was walking along treacherous paths,
Painfully uncertain.
Your dear hands were my guides.

However pale on the distant horizon
A faint hope of dawn was shining;
Your gaze was the morning.

No sound, except his resounding step,
Encouraged the traveler.
Your voice said to me: “” Walk on! “”

My timid heart, my dark heart
Wept, alone, on the sad road;
Love, delicious conqueror,

Has reunited us in joy.
