Caligula – Third Canto

Poem by Gérard De Nerval Period 19th century

Caesar has closed his eyelids;
Day must give way to night;
Let every light be extinguished,
Let every sound fade away.

Through these dark arcades,
Children of mad passions,
Vanish like shadows,
Flee like visions.

Go, let whim carry off
Each soul according to its desire,
And let the door, closed after you,
Never reopen except for pleasure.
