The Mountain in Labor

Fable by Jean De La Fontaine Collection The FablesThemes PoliticsPeriod 17th century

A Mountain in the throes of birth
Sent up a clamor so loud
That everyone, running toward the noise,
Believed it would surely bring forth
A City bigger than Paris:
It gave birth to a Mouse.

When I think of this Fable,
Whose tale is a lie
And whose meaning is true,
I picture an Author
Who says: I shall sing the war
That the Titans waged against the Master of thunder.
That promises a great deal: but what often comes of it?
Hot air.
