Sonnet of Oaristys

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

You made unexpected and fantastic confessions to me
One evening when you had royally adorned yourself,
High-coiffed, and with a poppy-red ribbon in your hair
That crowned your brow with its golden flame.

You had said to me “I am yours if you want me”
And, trembling, you surrendered to my kisses.
On your icy throat and on your nervous flanks
The shivers of Venus pearled your pearly skin.

The scent of your hair, the whiteness of your teeth,
Your supple jolts and your rumbling sighs,
Your anxious kisses of a playful lioness

Gave me, at once, fear and desire
To see end, after the dazzling pleasure,
By eternal death, the tumultuous night.
