Winter Has Ended: The Light Is Lukewarm

Poem by Paul Verlaine Collection La Bonne ChansonThemes HappinessPeriod 19th century

Winter has ended: the light is lukewarm
And dances, from the ground to the clear firmament.
Even the saddest heart must yield
To the immense joy scattered in the air.

Even this gloomy and sickly Paris
Seems to welcome the young suns,
And as if for an immense embrace
Stretches the thousand arms of its vermilion roofs.

For a year now I have had spring in my soul
And the green return of gentle Floréal,
Just as a flame surrounds a flame,
Puts ideal upon my ideal.

The blue sky prolongs, uplifts, and crowns
The unchanging azure where my love laughs.
The season is fair and my lot is good
And all my hopes have their turn at last.

Let summer come! let come again
Autumn and winter! And every season
Will be charming to me, O You whom adorn
This fantasy and this reason!
