Song on the Present Time

Poem by Eustorg De Beaulieu Period 16th century

The times are no longer as they used to be
Loyal love reigns only in crowns,
Faith is sick, men serve the god
Bacchus And the ewes let many rams graze.

The Church has put its head out of the halter,
Truth sleeps, favor keeps right shut away,
Justice is dead and is spoken of no more,
And charity does not come to appear.

All good deeds have gone to betake themselves
To Paradise where they will be better fed,
But their absence has corrupted people
So very deeply that no order can be set.
