To Alfred Tattet

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection New PoemsPeriod 19th century

Sonnet.

How sweet it is to be in the world, and what a blessing life is!
You said so this evening on a fine summer day.
You said it, friend, in an enchanted setting,
On the greenest hillside of your beloved forest.

Our horses, in the sun, trod the flowering grass:
And I, silent, riding at your side,
Let my reverie drift at random;
But deep in my heart I repeated:

Yes, life is a blessing, joy is an intoxication;
It is sweet to partake of it without fear and without care;
It is sweet to celebrate the gods of youth,

To crown with flowers one’s glass and one’s mistress,
To have lived thirty years as God has allowed,
And, still so young, to be old friends.

Bury, August 10, 1838.
