Tomorrow, at Dawn…

Poem by Victor Hugo Collection Les contemplationsThemes DeathPeriod 19th century

Tomorrow, at dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens,
I will set out. You see, I know that you are waiting for me.
I will go through the forest, I will go over the mountain.
I cannot stay far from you any longer.

I will walk with my eyes fixed on my thoughts,
Without seeing anything outside, without hearing any noise,
Alone, unknown, my back bent, my hands crossed,
Sad, and the day for me will be like the night.

I will look neither at the gold of the falling evening,
Nor at the sails in the distance descending toward Harfleur,
And when I arrive, I will place on your tomb
A bouquet of green holly and flowering heather.
