The Gypsy

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection AlcoolsThemes LovePeriod 20th century

The gypsy knew in advance
Our two lives crossed by the nights
We bade her farewell and then
From that well came forth Hope

Love heavy as a tame bear
Danced upright when we wished
And the blue bird lost its feathers
And the beggars their Ave

We know full well that we are damned
But the hope of loving along the way
Makes us think hand in hand
Of what the gypsy foretold
