The Bells

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection AlcoolsThemes LovePeriod 20th century

My handsome gypsy my lover
Listen to the bells that ring
We loved each other madly
Thinking no one saw us

But we were poorly hidden
All the bells around
Saw us from the top of the steeples
And tell it to everyone

Tomorrow Cyprien and Henri
Marie Ursule and Catherine
The baker’s wife and her husband
And then Gertrude my cousin

Will smile when I pass by
I won’t know where to hide
You will be far away I will cry
I may die of it
