Sadness

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection New PoemsPeriod 19th century

I have lost my strength and my life,
And my friends and my cheerfulness;
I have lost even the pride
That made others believe in my genius.

When I came to know the Truth,
I thought she was a friend;
When I understood and felt her,
I was already disgusted with her.

And yet she is eternal,
And those who did without her
Here below have ignored everything.

God speaks, we must answer Him.
The only good that remains to me in the world
Is to have sometimes wept.
