Reverie

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection ArrayPeriod 19th century

When the peasant sows, and digs the earth,
He sees only his grain, his oxen and his furrow.
— Nature in silence accomplishes the mystery, —
Lying on his plow, he awaits his harvest.

When his wife, returning home in the evening to their thatched cottage,
Tells him: “I am pregnant,” — he awaits his child.
When he sees that death is about to seize his old father,
He sits at the foot of the bed, and waits for him.

What more do we know?… and human wisdom,
What has it discovered more in its domain?
Over this vast universe it has, they say, walked;
And for five thousand years it has always been searching!
