XXXVII
I always loved the things that have wings.
When I was a child, I would go beneath the foliage,
And there take from the nests the tiniest birds.
At first I made them cages of reeds
Where I raised them among green mosses.
Later I left their windows open.
They did not fly away; or, if they fled to the woods,
When I called them back they came at my voice.
A dove and I long loved each other.
Now I know the art of taming souls.
