Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendThemes Death, Love, SadnessPeriod 19th century

I saw you in a dream after a sad farewell:
You were walking in the heavy and magnificent folds
Of a velvet gown of a more celestial blue
Than that of glaciers or Atlantic waves.

When toward the clear east a first fire burst forth;
A golden gorgon with cruel tragic eyes
Clasped it to your neck, but a sweet disavowal
Descended from your azure and modest eyes;

Behind you shone a sea of lapis lazuli
Whose tiered waves rose like a forecourt
Toward a great limpid sky with bluish splendors;

You held in your hands fresh forget-me-nots,
Without saying a single word you held out these flowers to me,
And I buried my forehead in them to hide my tears.
