A Lane in the Luxembourg

Poem by Gérard De Nerval Period 19th century

She passed by, the young girl
Lively and nimble as a bird
A shining flower in her hand,
A new refrain on her lips.

She may be the only one in the world
Whose heart would answer mine,
Who, coming into my deep night,
With a single glance would light it up!

But no, – my youth is over…
Farewell, sweet ray that shone on me, –
Perfume, young girl, harmony…
Happiness was passing by, – it has fled!
