French author, deceased on 25/09/1626 at Paris (France).
Théophile de Viau, a libertine poet, was one of the most widely read authors of the early 17th century. Accused of impiety for verses in the "Parnasse satyrique," he was sentenced to death by burning in absentia, imprisoned for two years, then banished. His poetry, free in spirit and responsive to nature, was rediscovered by the Romantics.
