Michel Altaroche, a journalist and songwriter born in Issoire, was editor-in-chief of "Le Charivari," an illustrated satirical newspaper. A republican, he was elected representative for Puy-de-Dôme to the Constituent Assembly in 1848. His song "La fête à l'Hôtel de Ville" wryly skewers the political life of his time.
