An Amorous Flame

Poem by Gérard De Nerval Period 19th century

An amorous flame
Consumes my fair days;
Ah! the peace of my soul
Has fled forever!

His departure, his absence
Are my coffin;
And far from his presence
Everything seems in mourning.

Then my poor head
Soon goes astray;
My feeble mind halts,
Then freezes at once.

An amorous flame
Consumes my fair days;
Ah! the peace of my soul
Has fled forever!

I am at my window,
Or outside, all day,
To see him appear,
Or hasten his return.

His walk that I admire,
His bearing so graceful,
His mouth with its sweet smile,
The charm of his eyes;

The enchanting voice
With which he knows how to set me aflame,
The caress of his hand,
Alas! and his kiss…

With an amorous flame
Consuming my fair days;
Ah! the peace of my soul
Has fled forever!

My heart soon quickens,
As soon as it feels him coming;
At the mercy of my tenderness
Can I hold him back?

O caresses of flame!
How I wish one day
To see my soul exhaled
In his kisses of love!
