Sonnet (I, I live life off to the side)

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Collar of ClawsPeriod 19th century

I, I live life off to the side,
Weeping when it’s time to celebrate.
People say: “How stupid he is!”
All in all, I’m rated badly.

I light a fire in the summer,
In the factory I am a poet;
For the clowns I go begging.
What does it matter! I love beauty.

Beauty of lands and of women,
Beauty of verses, beauty of flames,
Beauty of good, beauty of evil.

I have studied things too much;
Time marches at a normal pace:
Roses, roses, roses!
