To See Each Other as Much as Possible

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection New PoemsPeriod 19th century

Sonnet.

To see each other as much as possible and only love,
Without cunning or detours, without shame or lies,
Without a desire deceiving us, or remorse gnawing at us,
To live as two and give one’s heart at every moment;

To respect her thought as far as one plunges into it,
To make of one’s love a day instead of a dream,
And in that clarity to breathe freely
As Laura breathed and her lover sang.

You whose every step touches supreme grace,
It is you, your head in flowers, whom one would think carefree,
It is you who told me that one must love like this.

And it is I, old child of doubt and blasphemy,
Who listen to you, and think, and answer you this:
Yes, one lives otherwise, but this is how one loves.
