Dream

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Collar of ClawsPeriod 19th century

Oh! the fleur-de-lis!
The noble white flower,
The flower that bends
Over our pale brows!

Its suave perfume
Sweeter than honey
Tells of heaven,
Consoles the slave.

Its dazzling luxury
In the gentle season
Grows, grows, grows.
Who adorns us as much?

The rose is coquettish;
The blood-red gladiolus
But the lily is white
For the great feast.

Oh! the time of kings,
Of great captains,
Of haughty phrases
To cold foreigners!

Spring is getting ready;
The lilies will bloom.
Oh! not to die
Before this feast.
