Landscape

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

Versailles where the brilliance of roses is staggered,
The hanging gardens of old Babylon,
And the ruby fruits of the Thousand and One Nights,
Have long charmed my innocent boredom,
But now, matured by our sad era,
I flee those visions that pursue the artist,
And my dreaming gaze willingly lowers
Toward the lodge, where my contented porters vegetate:
Near the dusty windowpane where the man shaves,
I love the little pot where the houseleek stagnates.
