My Heart, Stop Up Your Ears

Poem by Charles D'Orléans Collection RondeauxPeriod 15th century

My heart, stop up* your ears
Against the wind of melancholy!
If it enters there, doubt it not,
It is marvelously dangerous.

Whether you give or whether you keep watch,
Do as I say, I beg of you;
My heart, stop up your ears
Against the wind of melancholy!

It causes sorrows without equal
From which is engendered the malady
That is not lightly cured.
Believe me, if you take Reason’s counsel,
My heart, stop up your ears!
