Music

Poem by Charles Baudelaire Collection The Flowers of EvilThemes ArtPeriod 19th century

Music often takes me like a sea !
Toward my pale star,
Under a ceiling of mist or in a vast ether,
I set sail ;

The chest forward and the lungs swollen
Like canvas,
I climb the back of the piled-up waves
That the night veils from me ;

I feel vibrating within me all the passions
Of a ship that suffers ;
The good wind, the storm and its convulsions

On the immense gulf
Rock me. Other times, dead calm, great mirror
Of my despair !
