Like in the Ponds Drowsing Beneath the Woods

Poem by Victor Hugo Collection Les Rayons et les OmbresPeriod 19th century

X

Like in the ponds drowsing beneath the woods,
In more than one soul two things are seen at once,
The sky, that tints the barely rippled waters
With all its rays and all its clouds,
And the silt, — dreary, dreadful, dark and dormant bed,
Where black reptiles vaguely swarm.
