Song of the Sculptors

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

Let’s proclaim the principles of art!
Let everybody open up!
Marble is a material apart,
There’s none that’s whiter.

Let’s proclaim the principles of art!
Let nobody move!
Clay soil is like lobster;
When it’s cooked, it’s red.

Let’s proclaim the principles of art!
Let everybody have fun!
Bronze lasts, unless by chance,
It’s worn out for some bums.

Let’s proclaim the principles of art!
Let everybody get drunk!
Although plaster is a bit pale,
It pours well into the mold.

Let’s proclaim the principles of art!
Let everybody get along!
Women’s contours are lard,
Flesh is meat.
