This Fair Coral, This Marble That Sighs

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

This fair coral, this marble that sighs,
And that ebony ornament of the brow,
And that alabaster in a shortened vault,
And those sapphires, that jasper and that porphyry,

Those diamonds, those rubies that a Zephyr
Holds alive with a softened sigh,
And those carnations, and those roses too,
And that fine gold, in which gold itself is mirrored,

Are in my heart in such deep emotion,
That no other object presents itself to me,
Except the beauty of their beauty that I adore,

And the pleasure that cannot do without
Dreaming, thinking, and rethinking them,
Dreaming, thinking, and rethinking them again.
