To the Jungfrau

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection Early PoemsPeriod 19th century

Jungfrau, the traveler who upon your head could
Halt, and set his foot upon his conquest,
Would feel in his heart a noble beating,
When his soul, on the slope of your eternal snow,
Like the young eaglet that passes and offers him its wing,
Would glide and flee beneath the clear firmament.

Jungfrau, I know a heart that, like you, hides itself.
Clothed, like you, in a spotless robe,
It is nearer to God than you are to the sky.
Be not astonished then, O sublime mountain,
If the first time I saw its summit,
I thought the place too high to be a mortal’s.
