To Grandpapa

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Collar of ClawsPeriod 19th century

One must listen, friends,
To the words of the ancestors.
– Let us never be submissive!
But, where do all beings come from?

So for that, may I dare,
Through the imaginary,
To send you a kiss
With all my heart, my grandfather?

You wrote very gentle verses
After gentle Theocritus,
“The Oaristys!” It is from you
That, writing these verses, I inherit.
