XVII
All is light, all is joy,
The spider with diligent foot
Fastens to the silken tulips
Its round laces of silver.
The quivering dragonfly
Mirrors the globes of its eyes
In the splendid pond where swarms
A whole mysterious world!
The rose seems, rejuvenated,
To couple with the vermilion bud;
The bird sings full of harmony
In the branches full of sunlight.
Its voice blesses the God of the soul
Who, always visible to the pure heart,
Makes the dawn, eyelid of flame,
For the sky, pupil of azure!
Under the woods, where all sound is dulled,
The timid fawn plays while dreaming;
In the green caskets of the moss
Shines the beetle, living gold.
The moon in daylight is warm and pale
Like a joyful convalescent;
Tender, she opens her opal eyes
From which the sweetness of heaven descends!
The wallflower with the bee
Frolics while kissing the old wall;
The warm furrow gaily awakens,
Stirred by the obscure germ.
Everything lives, and settles with grace,
The ray on the open threshold,
The shadow that flees on the water that passes,
The blue sky on the green hill!
The plain shines, happy and pure;
The wood chatters; the grass blooms. —
Man! fear nothing! nature
Knows the great secret, and smiles.
