Jeanne Makes Her Entrance

Poem by Victor Hugo Themes ChildhoodPeriod 19th century

Jeanne speaks; she says things she does not know;
She sends to the sea that roars, to the sonorous wood,
To the cloud, to the flowers, to the nests, to the firmament,
To immense nature a gentle twittering,
A whole speech, deep perhaps, which she finishes
With a smile in which a soul floats, in which a dream trembles,
An indistinct murmur, vague, obscure, confused, muddled.
God, the good old grandfather, listens marveling.
