We Must, You See, Forgive Each Other Things

Poem by Paul Verlaine Collection Romances sans parolesThemes ArrayPeriod 19th century

We must, you see, forgive each other things:
That way we shall be very happy
And if our life has its gloomy moments,
At least we shall be, shall we not, two weepers,

Oh, that we might mingle, kindred souls that we are,
With our confused vows the childlike sweetness
Of walking far from women and from men,
In the fresh forgetting of what exiles us!

Let us be two children, let us be two young girls
Enamored of nothing and astonished by all
Who go pale beneath the chaste bowers
Without even knowing that they are forgiven.
