Song of Fortunio

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection New PoemsPeriod 19th century

If you believe that I will tell
Whom I dare love,
I could not, for an empire,
Name her to you.

We’ll sing in a round,
If you wish,
That I adore her, and that she is blond
Like the wheat.

I do whatever her fancy
Wants to command me,
And I can, if she needs my life,
Give it to her.

Of the pain that a love unknown
Makes us suffer,
I bear the soul torn
Unto death.

But I love too much to say
Whom I dare love,
And I want to die for my sweetheart
Without naming her.
