Aubade Sung at Laetare Last Year

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection AlcoolsThemes Love, NaturePeriod 20th century

It is spring come along Pâquette
To walk in the pretty woods
The hens in the yard are cackling
The dawn in the sky makes folds of roses
Love is on its way to conquer you

Mars and Venus have returned
They kiss with frantic mouths
Before ingenuous scenes
Where under the leafing roses
Handsome pink gods dance naked

Come my tenderness is the regent
Of the flowering that appears
Nature is beautiful and touching
Pan whistles in the forest
The damp frogs sing
