To Eternal Love

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendThemes Love, NaturePeriod 19th century

O sea, O vast and sorrowful sea, who unroll
Beneath the tearful gaze of these millions of stars
The long moans of your millions of swells,
When in your surge toward the sky you crumble down;

O sky, O vast and sorrowful sky, who unveil,
Upon the moans of these millions of swells,
The tear-filled gazes of your millions of stars,
When the air no longer hides the sea beneath long veils;

You who, through millions and millions of years,
Through the ethers ever filled with alarms,
Toward one another stretch your condemned souls

To the eternal love that no time consumes,
It seems to me, this evening, that my narrow human heart
Holds all your sobs, holds all your tears.
